A 75-year-old man from Ban Dan District, Buriram Province, died in his bed due to severe cold weather as temperatures dropped to 18 degrees Celsius. His wife revealed that he neither drank alcohol nor had any underlying health conditions.
On 2 Jan 2026 at 07:30, police officers from Ban Dan Police Station in Ban Dan District, Buriram Province, received a report from the village headman of Ban Pho Thong, Village No. 15, that a villager was found dead inside his home. They promptly went to the scene along with emergency medical personnel from Ban Dan Subdistrict Municipality.
The scene was a single-story concrete house where the body of Mr. Wa Chamram, aged 75, the homeowner, was found deceased on his bed in the middle of the house. Examination revealed no signs of physical assault. Initial assessment indicated he had been dead for at least three hours, with the body beginning to stiffen.
Mrs. Jampai Cherngram, 69, the deceased's wife, explained that only three people lived in the house: her husband, herself, and their 9-year-old grandson. Her husband had no chronic illnesses and did not drink alcohol. During this cold period, her husband usually got up at 5 a.m. to light a fire outside the house to keep warm. Noticing something unusual, she went to wake him and found him dead on the bed in the middle of the house, with his body already stiff. The cause is believed to be shock induced by the cold weather, as he slept in an open area in the middle of the house.
Mr. Thongsuk Tansiedee, 67, a neighbor, said that in the evening, Mr. Wa had brought a chicken to his house. He believes the cause of death was cold weather shock, compounded by the area's temperature dropping to as low as 18 degrees Celsius.
Relatives have no objections to the cause of death. Authorities have handed over the body for traditional funeral rites to proceed.
