Asian Highway Inbound to Bangkok: Traffic Congested in All Lanes, Moving Slowly with Periodic Stops

Traffic on the Asian Highway inbound to Bangkok, passing through Ang Thong province, is heavy across all lanes, moving slowly with periodic slowdowns and stops near bridge bottlenecks and intersections, at speeds of about 30-40 kilometers per hour. The chief of Ang Thong provincial police emphasized that if an accident requires hospitalization, alcohol testing must be conducted in every case.

In the afternoon of 4 January 2026, reporters observed traffic conditions on the Asian Highway through Ang Thong province, from the border of Chaiyo District and Mueang District in Ang Thong to the border of Maharaj District in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. Traffic was heavy in all lanes, moving slowly with periodic slowdowns and stops near bridge bottlenecks and intersections, at speeds of about 30-40 kilometers per hour. After the long New Year holiday, many people were returning to Bangkok to work on Monday. Traffic congestion is expected to continue until evening and night.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Kitti Sakunee, Commander of Ang Thong Provincial Police, stated that during the 2026 New Year festival road safety operation, police have been strictly enforcing 10 main offenses, especially drunk driving, not wearing helmets, and driving without a license, as well as speeding. Enforcement of drunk driving cases is intensified 2 to 3 times more than during the Songkran festival, totaling about 150 cases, to ensure public safety and minimize accidents. He also emphasized that in any accident requiring hospitalization, alcohol testing is mandatory in all cases.
