New Cold Weather Alert: Meteorological Department Forecasts Further 3-5 Degree Drop Chiang Mai Eyes Record Low Temperatures

The new cold weather alert from the Meteorological Department forecasts an additional temperature drop of 3-5 degrees Celsius. In Chiang Mai, there is a chance of setting records for the lowest temperature and the longest-lasting frost.

On 7 January 2026, the Meteorological Department reported that from 7 to 10 January 2026, cold weather will continue nationwide. The North and Northeast regions will see temperatures fall by 3-5 degrees Celsius, while the Central region, East, Bangkok, and its vicinity will experience a drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, some thunderstorms are expected in parts of the South.

A reporter covering weather conditions in Chiang Mai Province stated that cold weather persists. The Northern Meteorological Center noted that a strong cold air mass from China spreading over upper Thailand will lower temperatures by another 3-5 degrees Celsius from 7 to 11 January. Morning temperatures across all areas will average between 9 and 17 degrees Celsius. Mountainous areas will experience cold to very cold weather with some frost occurring.

The new wave of cold winds continuing to cover the region benefits tourism, especially at Doi Inthanon National Park in Chom Thong District, where tourists continue to flock to experience extreme cold. This winter's severe cold has already caused frost or "mei kab" for 29 days. With the new cold air mass, temperatures may drop to as low as 1 degree Celsius, potentially setting a record for the longest frost occurrence in several years.
