“Nong Sim” Abused by Biological Mother Finds Healing in Stepmother’s Embrace

Nong Sim, a 9-year-old boy from Trat province, suffered hardship when his biological mother, addicted to alcohol, abused him. Though he could not choose his birth, his heart chose to endure hardship, hunger, and missing school, finding healing in the embrace of his new mother.

Nong Sim Nong Sim, 9 years old from Trat province, originally lived with three family members: his father, mother, and himself. The father worked as a hired driver, while the mother had a drinking problem and a violent temper. On bad days, she frequently physically abused Nong Sim, sometimes beating him severely. Despite his pleas, she would not stop, and the father was unaware of this until they separated. Nong Sim later confided this because he did not want his parents to argue.

After the parents separated, the father took Nong Sim back to live at his own home with his grandmother. Soon after, the father brought his new partner to live with them — actually his ex-wife from nine years earlier. They had separated because the father’s former father-in-law disapproved of him. Later, the father remarried Nong Sim’s mother, and this reconciliation reunited him with two daughters who had been separated from him after the divorce. The daughters found their father and reunited with him.

Meeting his father’s new partner made Nong Sim hesitant to approach her, fearing further abuse. However, the stepmother cared for him well and loved him as if he were her own child.

With only the father as the family’s breadwinner working in construction, and the grandmother elderly and unable to find work, the stepmother worked filling soil in plant pots but some days had no work. She sought work diligently, walking several kilometers to ask for jobs, but work was scarce. The family struggled because their income was insufficient to support everyone. Sometimes Nong Sim went hungry and had to drop out of school due to financial issues, despite his strong desire to learn and be educated like his friends so he could support his family. Showing gratitude and determination, Nong Sim helped by collecting holy basil leaves to earn money. Today, he is working hard to earn a bicycle for his stepmother so she can travel to work without tiring from long walks. A television program surprised him by arranging for him to return to school and study for free through to a bachelor’s degree.

The program “Small but Mighty: The Fighting Spirit” highlights Nong Sim’s goodness and bravery. Though he came to the show with nothing, he carries a small but strong fighting heart determined to fulfill his dreams and give his family a new life.
