"Military medical team" , has conducted mental health assessments of border troops after the Thai-Cambodian fighting and found morale to be good.
On 13 Jan 2026 GMT+7, reports stated that the Army, concerned for the health of troops deployed in the Thai-Cambodian border conflict area, assigned the Army Medical Department and local military hospitals to send medical teams to check physical health and assess mental status of troops at various operations bases in Surin province. Wiwat Yothin Camp Hospital in Surin led a medical team to boost the morale of border soldiers from the 2nd Army Region. They conducted evaluations of mental health, physical health, and risk factors potentially impacting troops from the recent events in Surin, to enable timely treatment and intervention following the ceasefire agreement.
Additionally, questionnaires were conducted to provide care, facilitate discussions, and alleviate concerns. The military medical team also performed physical health checks on troops with chronic illnesses, as part of the Army’s comprehensive medical care measures for the 2nd Army Region, covering the three main phases of military operations.
Meanwhile, the medical team’s role includes identifying, monitoring, and assisting troops experiencing stress or mental health risks. This involves observing symptoms, assessing severity, offering counseling and initial therapy, and promptly referring at-risk individuals for treatment and psychological recovery. In particular, for troops injured or killed, the team provides mental health care for both patients and families, along with repeated health screenings to prevent stress disorders or psychological trauma from past mission experiences.
Captain Pipat Panliao, a psychiatric military doctor at Wiwat Yothin Camp Hospital in Surin, said the morale-boosting medical team from the 2nd Army Region has been deployed along the border at various points to provide mental health care to troops engaged in recent border conflicts.
However, most troops currently show good morale, as they receive support from fellow soldiers, commanders, and a large outpouring of encouragement from civilians in the rear areas. They remain fully prepared to protect Thailand’s sovereignty, though they remain wary of Cambodia’s sincerity and cautious about a potential return to aggression.
