The Department of Highways explained that a 1,000-millimeter diameter water pipe belonging to Samut Sakhon Municipality burst, causing the road surface on Rama 2 Road to subside. They recommend avoiding the area as repairs are in progress and traffic is being managed accordingly.
On 17 Jan 2026 GMT+7, the Department of Highways clarified the incident of road subsidence caused by a burst water pipe, resulting in a sinkhole on the parallel road of Rama 2 heading into Bangkok. The incident occurred around 06:30 at kilometer marker 29+350 on the parallel inbound side. One pickup truck was damaged, but there were no reports of injuries or fatalities at this time.
Investigation revealed that the location had previously been excavated by the Samut Sakhon Municipality Waterworks Division to connect a 1,000-millimeter diameter water supply pipe. After the work, the road surface was compacted and restored. Subsequently, the water pipe burst, causing the road surface in that area to subside.
The Department of Highways dispatched personnel to the site to direct traffic and ensure the safety of road users initially. They have coordinated with Samut Sakhon Municipality officials, who are currently on site inspecting and addressing the situation.
The Department of Highways requests cooperation to temporarily avoid the affected area. Vehicles on the parallel road can use a detour to merge onto the main lanes at kilometer 29+600. For more information, contact the Department of Highways hotline at 1586, a free 24-hour service.
