On 19 January 2026, reporters reported a tragic accident in which a pickup truck carrying Laotian workers collided head-on with another pickup on the road between Khlong Hat and Watthana Nakhon districts in Sa Kaeo Province, causing a total of 5 deaths including an unborn child, and many injuries.

The incident occurred at approximately 18:19 on 18 January 2026. Police officers from Khlong Hat Police Station and Sawang rescue teams were alerted to a severe head-on collision on the route between Khlong Hat and Watthana Nakhon districts and promptly rushed to the scene to investigate.

At the scene, an Isuzu D-Max four-door pickup was found with its front heavily damaged, having collided head-on with another pickup truck transporting migrant workers. The second vehicle was severely damaged, and several injured and deceased passengers were trapped inside.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the pickup involved in the accident was carrying Laotian workers, having traveled from Chanthaburi Province. It picked up workers at various points along the route and was headed to Nakhon Phanom Province, carrying a total of 15 passengers including an unborn child before the collision occurred.

The accident resulted in 5 fatalities, including an unborn child, and numerous injuries, some serious. Sawang rescue teams provided first aid at the scene and transported the injured to Khlong Hat and Wang Nam Yen hospitals for treatment.

Authorities later coordinated with relevant agencies to assist and arrange transport for the injured and related individuals back to Nakhon Phanom Province. Investigators are examining the scene, interviewing drivers and survivors, and conducting a thorough inquiry into the accident's cause to proceed with legal actions.

Ms. Promphatson Limtrakoon, acting head of Sa Kaeo’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, revealed that all the Laotian workers came from various villages to work fruit picking in Chanthaburi and planned to return to Laos, arriving in Nakhon Phanom by morning to continue by boat to Khammouane Province. The vehicle involved had full compulsory motor insurance, and insurers are coordinating compensation for the injured and deceased. Currently, 7 injured are being treated at Sa Kaeo Hospital and 1 at Wang Nam Yen Hospital.
