A lawyer revealed that Thaksin is in good health, expressed thanks to the public for their continued encouragement, and urged them to exercise their voting rights in the 8 February 2026 election. He emphasized that parole benefits inmates and is conducted according to the law, ensuring fairness.
At 09:45 on 22 January 2026 at Klong Prem Central Prison, Mr. Bannapot Damapong, brother of Khun Ying Pojaman Damapong, represented the Shinawatra family in visiting Thaksin Shinawatra, accompanied by Winyat Chatmontri, Thaksin’s personal lawyer.
After about 45 minutes of visitation, lawyer Winyat revealed that Thaksin remains in good spirits and health, closely following the upcoming general election scheduled for 8 February. He hopes the public will come out in greater numbers to vote but did not elaborate further. Their discussions mostly concerned legal matters and his responsibilities. Regarding the parole process, Winyat understands it involves screening inmates to identify eligible candidates, then submitting the list to the Department of Corrections. This procedure aligns with statements already made by the Justice Minister. He stressed that parole is a benefit for inmates, granted according to law and based on the duration of imprisonment served.
Winyat also addressed the recent action by the People's Network for Thailand Reform (PDRT) submitting a letter to the Justice Minister questioning Thaksin's parole eligibility. He questioned why PDRT was involved, but acknowledged their right to submit such a letter. He expressed concern about attempts to obstruct the lawful process, noting that if such actions affected him or his family, they would understand the implications. He noted that obstructing the law is unacceptable, questioning whether those opposing the process are motivated by payment or other incentives. Nonetheless, he recognized it as their right to act as they see fit.
