Train Wreckage Moved After Crane Collapse Awaiting Expert Opinion Before Charging Offenders

Italian-Thai Development used trailer trucks to transport the train wreckage crushed by a crane collapse from the accident site to the Nakhon Ratchasima Locomotive Depot. Regarding the case, authorities are awaiting expert opinions before pressing charges against those responsible.

At 13:30 on 22 January 2026, Italian-Thai Development brought trailer trucks to load the wreckage of the passenger train crushed by a crane from the company's high-speed rail construction project. The collapse, which occurred on 14 January 2026 at Ban Thanon Kot, Sikhiu Subdistrict, Sikhiu District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, caused 30 deaths and 71 injuries.

Italian-Thai Development used two trailers, two cranes, and a six-wheel truck to load wreckage from the first and second train bogies. The third bogie was towed by the State Railway of Thailand to Nakhon Ratchasima Station. The train wreckage was transported from Ban Thanon Kot, Sikhiu District, along Mittraphap Road to downtown Nakhon Ratchasima, a distance of 60 kilometers. Rescue vehicles from Huk 31 Nakhon Ratchasima, Phromtham Sikhiu, and Sawang Metta Nakhon Ratchasima—16 vehicles in total—escorted and closed traffic along the route together with traffic police from Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima Police Station to facilitate the transport. The wreckage was successfully stored at the Nakhon Ratchasima Locomotive Depot, Mechanical Engineering Division 2, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

As for initial compensation, the families of those who died in the accident received 1,773,000 baht per person, while injured victims received preliminary assistance of 50,000 baht each. Currently, four severely injured patients remain hospitalized at Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, with 10 others moderately injured. The State Railway of Thailand has removed the damaged tracks and installed new ones but has not yet reopened the northeastern line through Sikhiu District, pending Italian-Thai Development's assurance of 100 percent operational safety.

Meanwhile, passengers traveling on the northeastern railway line can still use trains operating on the Bangkok-Saraburi-Lopburi-Bua Yai Junction-Nakhon Ratchasima route, which adds approximately 100 kilometers to the travel distance compared to the original route.

Regarding the investigation, Police Colonel Thatchaphon Chinwong, Superintendent of Sikhiu Police Station, revealed that officers have interviewed 115 witnesses, divided into five groups: State Railway of Thailand employees, passengers, contractors from the high-speed rail construction project, injured passengers, and relatives of the deceased. Nearly all evidence has been collected. Currently, the case is awaiting expert opinions on crane operation to supplement the file. Once complete, investigators will call the offenders to formally press charges. It remains uncertain whether charges will be filed within January 2026.
