Phuket Airport is preparing various strict measures and screening procedures for tourists arriving from India, averaging 13 flights per day, to prevent the Nipah Virus from entering the country.
On 25 Jan 2026 GMT+7, following reports of infections and deaths from the Nipah Virus in India, the Department of Disease Control has closely monitored the situation and emphasized surveillance and screening at international disease control checkpoints. Although Thailand has yet to report cases, the public is urged to follow official information calmly and avoid panic.
At Phuket Airport, multiple related agencies—including airport officials, disease control officers, Phuket Provincial Public Health Office staff, tourist police, customs, and immigration—have prepared and rehearsed quarantine and disease screening measures within the airport, especially at the international arrivals terminal, enforcing controls as strictly as during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Phuket Airport receives an average of 13 direct flights daily from India. These include IndiGo flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata; Air India from New Delhi and Mumbai; SpiceJet Air from New Delhi; Vietjet Air from Mumbai; Akasa Air from Bengaluru; and AirAsia X from Chennai and Cochin. Kolkata, West Bengal, offers about five direct flights weekly to Phuket Airport, operating every Wednesday to Sunday at 11:35 a.m., averaging 165 passengers daily and 820 weekly.
News reports state that Phuket Airport Authority (PHA) has prepared screening measures for the Nipah Virus following outbreaks in West Bengal, an ongoing surveillance area. PHA has integrated operations with international disease control checkpoints to proactively screen passengers arriving from affected regions to closely monitor and prevent disease spread.
Currently, PHA receives one airline with five weekly direct flights from the affected area and nearby regions.
To ensure smooth and effective operations, PHA has enhanced public health measures within the terminal building, such as increasing cleaning cycles and sanitizing common contact points. Coordination with international disease control checkpoints is maintained closely to ensure safety and confidence among passengers, users, and airport personnel.
PHA is committed to strictly implementing the Ministry of Public Health's measures and guidelines should disease control levels be raised in the future. Passengers and users are encouraged to trust PHA's public health management system.
PHA reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding health safety in all aspects.
