CCTV footage shows a black-clad gang armed with guns abducting a woman from a money exchange shop in central Tachileik, forcing her into a white sedan before fleeing. The incident is suspected to involve a ransom gang connected to gray market investments.
A shocking incident occurred in central Tachileik, Myanmar, near Ban San Sai Tai, opposite Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province. At least four unidentified assailants dressed entirely in black, wearing hats and face masks to conceal their identities, stormed a well-known currency exchange shop. They threatened and restrained a woman inside with firearms, then dragged her into a waiting white sedan and quickly fled the scene on the morning of 24 January 2026.
CCTV footage from inside and outside the shop reveals a well-planned attack by the armed assailants. Despite the woman’s resistance, the black-clad men used force to overpower her, restraining her neck and dragging her from the counter into the vehicle amid the shocked onlookers in the nearby neighborhood.
Reports indicate this is not the first such incident at this currency exchange. Not long ago, a similar event involved the abduction of a man from the same shop for ransom. This repeated attack on a female employee or owner has left local residents and business operators fearful for their personal safety and property security.
Local sources suggest that recent kidnappings in Tachileik are often connected to influential groups or gray market business operations, especially ransom demands reaching millions of baht. Many cases involve mistaken identity or attempts to collect debts from gambling and illegal enterprises on the Myanmar side.
Currently, the victim’s relatives remain in shock and have yet to be contacted by the kidnappers regarding ransom demands. Local authorities in Tachileik have deployed forces and are reviewing CCTV footage along likely escape routes of the white sedan. They are also coordinating with border officials to prevent the kidnappers from moving the hostage into other hard-to-track territories.
