First Army Region Reports Thai-Cambodian RBC Meeting Fails to Reach Agreement

The First Army Region announced that the recent Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting between Thailand and Cambodia was unable to finalize a memorandum of understanding that fulfills the goals of both parties.

On 29 January 2025, the First Army Region reported the outcome of the Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting between the First Army Region and Military Region 5.

The RBC meeting between the First Army Region and Military Region 5 was held at the permanent border crossing office in Poipet, Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia, aiming to reduce tensions and maintain peace along the border area, in line with the Joint Statement from the third special session of the General Border Committee (GBC) in 2025.

On 27–28 January 2026, the secretariat committee, chaired on the Thai side by the Chief of Staff of the First Army Region and on the Cambodian side by the Deputy Commander of Military Region 5, held discussions to resolve issues in the area and drafted a memorandum of understanding. If both sides agreed to the draft, they planned to jointly sign it on 29 January 2026 to implement it going forward.

The secretariat committee meeting was unable to finalize the memorandum of understanding to meet the true objectives of both sides, as some issues require further discussion. Therefore, no signing took place as scheduled. The secretariat committee will arrange further talks to draft an agreement that genuinely fulfills both parties' goals in the future.

Currently, the First Army Region continues to carry out sovereignty protection duties along the Thai-Cambodian border, maintaining security in the area under its responsibility to ensure public safety to the highest degree, adhering to the Joint Statement from the third special session of the General Border Committee (GBC) in 2025.
