On 30 Jan 2026 GMT+7, reporters observed a bustling scene at the Uthai Thani municipal pawnshop, where many people continuously came to use the services, especially during the period of historic volatility and high gold prices. Although the latest gold price dropped to 78,890 baht per baht-weight in the market, public interest in pawning and redeeming remains strong.
Miss Pattaya Thiansaeng, manager of the Uthai Thani municipal pawnshop, revealed that the previous surge in gold prices clearly led to more people using the service. On 29 Jan, the pawnshop was busy all day, and on 30 Jan it remained just as lively. Some residents brought gold to pawn in order to raise funds for daily expenses. The pawnshop has increased its pawn loan rates to align with current market gold prices to meet public demand.
Additionally, another group of people has been redeeming gold to sell at gold shops, aiming to profit from the still-high price differences. To reduce the burden of pawn interest, they choose to redeem and sell rather than keep pawning. This results in daily continuous cycles of pawning and redeeming transactions.
However, officials noted that today's gold price trends show a sharp downward tendency, and they are closely monitoring if prices will fall further. Some people remain concerned that gold prices might drop lower or rebound higher, prompting them to act quickly while prices remain highly volatile.
