Colorful Dry Season: Satun Prepares for the Grand 2026 Traditional and International Kite Festival

Satun Province announced preparations to hold the 2026 Traditional and International Kite Festival from 12 to 15 February 2026 to preserve and continue cultural traditions and promote the creative economy and cultural tourism.

During kite-flying season, the skies over Satun fill with color in the dry season or kite wind season, as children and parents bring their kites to play, brightening the sky with a variety of vibrant kites.

Today (4 Feb 2026) at the temporary Air Force airport in Khlong Khut Subdistrict, Mueang District, Satun, Governor Kanit Khongchuay, along with Mr. Samrit Liangprasert, Chief of Satun Provincial Administrative Organization, Ms. Patchakorn Tripan from Satun Tourism and Sports, Mr. Warit Wichit, Deputy Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Satun Office, and Mr. Ron Spoonding, head of the Kiteper team, held a press conference for the 45th Satun Traditional and International Kite Festival 2026. The event aims to promote public awareness of Satun’s tourism. Officials and media attended, along with a stunt kite performance by students from Nikom Phatthanapang 6 School, a school under the Satun Provincial Administrative Organization.

The 45th Satun Traditional and International Kite Festival and Thai Kites of Four Regions will take place from 12 to 15 February 2026 at the Air Force Base in Satun. The event features a kite competition for the Royal Trophy awarded by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, international fancy kite shows with performers from over 44 countries worldwide, stunt kite and kite fighting displays by world and continental champions, traditional kites from Thailand's four regions, a motor show, a "Lan Fai Len Lom" light and wind-themed checkpoint, a festival of Andaman Siamese and diverse foods, and the MISS SATUN 2026 contest.

Kite flying in Satun is a distinctive local identity, especially the “Buffalo Kite,” which reflects local wisdom and community way of life. The kite festival not only preserves and continues cultural heritage but also promotes the creative economy, cultural tourism, and raises Satun’s profile nationally and internationally.

To ensure the event runs smoothly, the Chief of Satun Provincial Administrative Organization performed a traditional blessing by presenting yellow sticky rice with goat curry and lighting nine incense sticks at the festival site on the airport grounds. This ceremony is to inform and seek blessings from the local spirits for the event's success. Historically, this ritual has helped the annual festival proceed without obstacles. This year, after the press conference, the yellow sticky rice with goat curry was shared with participants attending the press event.
