A landslide buried a Myanmar worker to death while he was working in an underground cable duct more than 10 meters deep near BTS Bang Na. Authorities took over an hour to recover the body.
At 23:40 on 4 February 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Natthanon Nabngamthanet, deputy investigator at Bang Na Police Station, received a report of a Myanmar construction worker buried to death by a landslide inside an underground cable duct more than 10 meters deep near BTS Bang Na station on Sukhumvit Road, Bang Na Tai subdistrict, Bang Na district, Bangkok.
At the scene, officials and Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescue volunteers rushed to assist the victim, Mr. Wei A Le, a Myanmar national about 30 years old, who was buried by soil while working inside the cable duct. This duct is part of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority’s project to replace overhead power lines with underground cables.
Aniwat Sirichokphatthana, a Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescue volunteer at the Bang Na station, disclosed that they were notified around 23:30 by the emergency hotline 191. They quickly deployed to the site and found that, according to fellow workers, they had tried to help for about 30 minutes before the rescuers arrived. The victim was completely buried and unconscious.
When volunteers went down to check, they found no signs of life but promptly brought high-area rescue equipment and a stretcher down to assist, successfully retrieving the body after about one hour.
Inquiries with fellow workers who helped revealed that only the victim was underground at the time. This aligns with the supervisor’s statement to investigators, confirming one worker was digging inside the tunnel at a depth of 8-10 meters, aiming to reach about 14 meters. Soil on both the left and right sides collapsed, burying the worker. Everyone tried their best to assist.
Investigators have coordinated with the forensic science division and forensic doctors from Chulalongkorn Hospital to examine the scene. They plan to summon the supervising engineer and others involved in the project for questioning to determine the cause. The body was taken by Ruamkatanyu Foundation personnel to the Chulalongkorn Hospital morgue for autopsy before being released to the family for funeral rites.
The overhead-to-underground electrical system replacement project is underway from 1 December 2025 to 31 July 2026. Work is conducted nightly from 22:00 to 05:00 along Sukhumvit Road, from Bang Na intersection to the mouth of Sukhumvit Soi 107.
