Metropolitan Electricity Authority Explains Soil Collapse Incident at Bang Na Underground Power Line Construction Site

The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) explains the unforeseeable soil collapse at the underground power line construction pit at Bang Na station, stresses that the main structure remains stable, and has promptly moved to provide full care and compensation to the deceased.

On 5 February 2026, MEA clarified the facts regarding an accident at the project converting overhead power lines to underground cables along the Green Line Skytrain route (between Sukhumvit 81 and Sukhumvit 107). The incident occurred on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, at approximately 23:30 near Bang Na Skytrain station on the inbound Sukhumvit road. The accident happened while the contractor was excavating to install the third-level bracing system within the sheet pile soil retention system. During the work, soil from the side collapsed onto a Myanmar national worker employed by the contractor, resulting in death at the scene.

As the agency responsible for adhering to international safety standards, MEA immediately inspected the site after the incident and found that the entire sheet pile soil retention system remained structurally intact with no cracks or failures. However, to ensure maximum safety, MEA ordered the contractor to temporarily halt this work stage to review the safety protocol. Initial protective measures require workers to operate from suspended platforms rather than standing on the pit floor, and a thorough inspection of soil conditions must be conducted before each work session. Additionally, MEA has reinforced strict adherence to safety standards in all contractor operations.

Regarding support for those affected, MEA has sent representatives to express condolences to the deceased worker's family and confirmed it will act as a liaison to coordinate and monitor compensation according to legal rights and humanitarian principles from the contractor, ensuring appropriate and timely restitution.

MEA reaffirms its commitment to advancing the underground power line project to enhance electrical system efficiency and urban aesthetics, prioritizing the safety of both workers and the public as its highest concern.
