Prosecutor Calls Grandfather for Mediation Over 1.7 Million Baht Compensation After Nong Korn Receives Only 200,000 Baht

The prosecutor called for negotiations with the father of a 28-year-old woman who died when a crane fell onto a train in Si Kio. The father received over 1.7 million baht in compensation to manage, while the deceased's 10-year-old son received only 200,000 baht.

On 6 Feb 2026, Express Train No. 21 from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station to Ubon Ratchathani was struck by a railway construction crane that fell between Nong Nam Khun and Si Kio stations at Ban Thanon Kot, Si Kio Subdistrict, Si Kio District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The accident caused 30 passenger deaths and numerous injuries.

Among the deceased was Ms. Supinna or Pin Satbut, 28, from Buriram Province, who initially received 1,700,000 baht in compensation from related agencies. The full amount was transferred to the account of Mr. Samrerng Satbut, 64, Supinna’s father. Supinna had a 10-year-old son named Nong Korn, who currently lives with his grandfather because his father died when he was just one year old. Later, 200,000 baht was transferred to Nong Korn, with the claim that the remaining money was used to pay off debts for Supinna and cover funeral expenses.

Regarding this, Mr. Pairawan Thiamlert, village headman of Village No. 6, Ban Ta Sadam Yai, said that previously the Buriram governor instructed him to investigate the grandfather’s funds related to the compensation and funeral expenses. Mr. Samrerng submitted an account showing he received 1,339,000 baht, which was spent on redeeming farmland (300,000 baht, paid), cooperative debts (60,752 baht, paid), debts to the father (80,000 baht), father's car debt (403,000 baht), Suphattana (200,000 baht), older brother (166,500 baht, paid), and funeral costs (700,000 baht, paid), totaling 1,910,252 baht in debts, with another 683,000 baht still outstanding.

The village headman said the financial statement was on paper, and despite reviewing it, he could not understand how all these debts related to Nong Korn, the grandson. He especially questioned the funeral cost of 700,000 baht, which he considered excessive, estimating the visible expenses to be no more than 450,000 baht. Many people helped with the funeral, not counting several government agencies that contributed cash, including the village’s funeral fund which raised about 90,000 baht.

Meanwhile, Mr. Boonruang Kingprakorn, 51, Nong Korn’s uncle who has raised him since childhood, said he was unaware of the financial details but if asked whether he wanted the money, he would like to have it as educational funds for Nong Korn. He explained that once the money is in the child’s account, it can only be withdrawn when the child turns 18. However, he was not overly concerned about receiving the money because he plans to continue raising the boy regardless.

Mrs. Piyanat Siengsak, Director of the Buriram Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office, stated that today they brought both the child’s grandfather and guardian to meet with the Buriram Rights Protection and Legal Enforcement Prosecutor for mediation to find a joint resolution. The goal is to prevent conflict and ensure the child can have both his grandfather and father’s side involved as normal. Initial talks were positive, but the final agreement is pending.

However, when reporters asked Nong Korn’s grandfather about the situation, he declined to provide any information.
