Trat Border Residents Remain Concerned About Third Clash Impacting Harvest Season, Urge Government for Swift Action and Livelihood Support

Residents near the Trat border remain worried, fearing a third round of clashes could disrupt the fruit harvest season. They urge the government to act decisively by permanently closing border checkpoints while also addressing local livelihood issues.

On 9 Feb 2026 GMT+7, reporters noted that after the 2026 election concluded and the Election Commission released unofficial results to the public following the 5 p.m. closing of polling stations on 8 Feb, the "Bhumjaithai Party" emerged as the top vote-getter.

Recently, our team visited the border area in Mueang District, Trat Province, where two previous clashes occurred, to gather local opinions. Most residents agreed on the need for the government to close border checkpoints and expressed concern about a potential third clash in the border area. They strongly opposed any repeat incidents, especially as it is currently fruit season, with durians approaching harvest in about two months. Another clash would severely damage crops and cause greater harm than the previous two incidents.

Phawin Senarak, a durian farmer in Mueang Trat District, said he was pleased with the government formation but stressed the need for concrete government action to resolve border issues alongside supporting citizens’ livelihoods. He especially emphasized the needs of durian, rambutan, and mangosteen farmers currently producing fruit. He acknowledged ongoing worries that a third clash would cause more severe damage than before.

Similarly, Anek Yunnan, a durian farmer from Bo Rai District, called on the new government to decisively resolve border problems, including considering permanent closure of border checkpoints to prevent unrest. He urged a focus on improving living conditions and the local economy, opposing any third clash that would harm the agricultural sector, especially fruit farmers.
