"Maha Sarakham District 1" is the location. Overnight turmoil occurred as a crowd of over 200 people, including students, surrounded the Election Commission office demanding a recount of votes in District 1.
It was reported that around midnight on 9 Feb 2026, a group of students and protesters gathered near Maha Sarakham Rajabhat University to call on the Maha Sarakham provincial Election Commission office to clarify and conduct a new vote count in District 1, following concerns about the transparency of the vote counting.
The protesters stated that there are still issues requiring clear answers, such as the case of missing ballots and the vote counting procedures in some precincts. They affirmed they would continue their sit-in until a fair and verifiable conclusion is reached from the relevant authorities.
Later, Mr. Settha Nernsuwan, the district chief and chairman of the Election Commission for District 1, explained that he does not have the authority to open ballot boxes. A formal request must be submitted to the central Election Commission for them to consider following proper procedures, which has caused concern among the protesters.
Initially, it was reported that the central Election Commission would hold a meeting to consider the matter at 10:00 a.m. today. Any further developments will be reported in due course.
