On 11 February 2026, reporters reported that an assailant armed with a firearm attacked Phatong Prathan Keereewat School in Phatong Subdistrict, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, taking an unknown number of students and teachers hostage. The suspect was identified as a male aged approximately 18-19. Later, he decided to discard his weapon and surrender to police.(Footage shows the moment the assailant stormed the school, shooting the principal and a student before deciding to drop his weapon and surrender.)
Later, at 19:30, Mr. Rattasat Chidchu, Governor of Songkhla Province, revealed that the incident occurred around 16:00. The assailant was a teenage male with erratic behavior who had recently received psychiatric treatment at Songkhla Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital and was discharged in December 2025.
The incident began when the suspect attacked a police officer with a knife and attempted to seize a 9mm government-issued firearm, then fled into the school. He took the school director and students hostage. The event occurred near dismissal time, leading to a confrontation with police who responded to the incident, involving live gunfire. The assailant was injured and was ultimately detained and sent to Hat Yai Hospital.
Police Major General Theerasak Chaiyotha, Commander of the Songkhla Provincial Police, reported three injured individuals: the school director and one female student seriously wounded, and another female student slightly injured while fleeing by jumping from a building. Initial investigations found the suspect has a biological sister attending the same school. The motive, including whether it stemmed from dissatisfaction with the teachers, remains undetermined and is under ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, the Songkhla Provincial Education Office initially announced that the school district has suspended classes for two days to allow forensic police to collect evidence for the case and to prepare to review and strengthen school safety measures.
