Department of Corrections Reports No New Monkeypox Cases Among Inmates, Confirms Prisons Remain Safe

The Department of Corrections announced that no additional inmates have contracted monkeypox, confirming that all prisons and detention centers are safe with no spread of monkeypox disease.

On 14 Feb 2026 GMT+7, the Department of Corrections released a statement regarding a new inmate admitted to Thonburi Special Prison on 20 Jan. The inmate developed a high fever and tissue necrosis in the foot and was transferred for treatment at the Corrections Hospital. During preparation for foot surgery, the inmate exhibited symptoms consistent with monkeypox (Mpox). Laboratory testing confirmed the monkeypox diagnosis. Infection control teams isolated high-risk inmates and implemented the 'Bubble and Seal' method in the prison to quickly contain the outbreak.

Thonburi Special Prison coordinated with related agencies including the Corrections Hospital, Ministry of Public Health, and the Department of Disease Control to closely monitor and prevent infection from 13 Feb onward. Continuous screening for abnormal symptoms among inmates has been conducted, and as of today, no inmates show symptoms consistent with monkeypox.

The Department of Corrections is working with the Department of Disease Control to procure vaccines for inmates and staff to reduce risks within prisons promptly. All prisons and detention centers continue to monitor and strictly adhere to guidelines for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of monkeypox (Mpox) as mandated by the Department of Corrections and the Department of Disease Control under the Ministry of Public Health. They reaffirm that all facilities are safe with no monkeypox outbreaks.
