Department of Corrections Reports No New Monkeypox Cases After Inmate Death

Department of Corrections Latest update shows no inmates infected with monkeypox after an inmate's death; vaccines to be given to at-risk groups


On 15 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Yutthana Nakruangsri, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Corrections and spokesperson, stated regarding the inmate death from monkeypox that Thonburi Special Prison has coordinated with relevant agencies including the Corrections Hospital, Ministry of Public Health, and Department of Disease Control to closely monitor and prevent infection since 13 Feb. They have also been conducting ongoing screenings for abnormal symptoms among inmates at Thonburi Special Prison and will continue surveillance for 21 days from 13 Feb 2026 GMT+7.

Currently, no inmates have shown symptoms consistent with monkeypox. On 16 Feb 2026 GMT+7, the Department of Corrections coordinated with the Department of Disease Control to bring vaccines for inmates and staff who are at risk or had close contact with the deceased to receive vaccination.

Furthermore, all prisons and correctional institutions are strictly following the guidelines for diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance to prevent monkeypox (MPox) as ordered by the Department of Corrections, in line with measures from the Department of Disease Control and Ministry of Public Health. The department assures that all correctional facilities are safe and that there is no outbreak of monkeypox.
