Buriram Prepares for the 34th Thousand-Year-Old Glazed Pottery Festival to Boost Economy After Clashes

Buriram is preparing to hold the 34th "Thousand-Year-Old Glazed Pottery Festival of Ban Kruat," inviting visitors to view historical and archaeological evidence of glazed pottery production, with an expected attendance of over 10,000 tourists.

On 18 Feb 2026, it was reported that Ban Kruat District, Buriram Province, is preparing to host the "Thousand-Year-Old Glazed Pottery Festival and Ban Kruat District Red Cross Fair," marking the first event since the recent clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers.

Mr. Akwat Phuangprakhon, Ban Kruat District Chief, announced that the event will take place from 28 February to 5 March 2026. He stated that Ban Kruat is recognized as one of Thailand's important ancient civilization sites due to historical and archaeological evidence indicating past prosperity.

This includes artistic and industrial achievements, especially in producing colored glazed earthenware known as Khmer ceramics. Evidence shows Ban Kruat was a central hub for producing ancient glazed pottery over a thousand years old, which was distributed to various regional cities and surrounding areas.

Additionally, seven clusters of ancient kilns comprising around 100 kilns have been found in Ban Kruat, along with uniquely beautiful glazed pottery uncovered throughout the district's sub-districts and villages.

The district chief added that the current border situation remains calm. Coordination with the 2nd Army Region suggests no incidents are expected during the festival since the Cambodian side is currently unprepared. He expressed confidence in the event's safety and expects over 10,000 tourists, with economic activity generating tens of millions of baht. This event is seen as a boost to Ban Kruat’s economy following two recent rounds of conflict.
