Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary Closes Peacock Tower After Tigress Sonsa Takes Up Residence and Gives Birth

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary has announced the closure of natural study andtourism activities in the area of"Peacock Tower" after discovering a female tiger named "Sonsa" residing there and giving birth.

On 22 Feb 2026, it was reported that the Facebook pageHuai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary announced the closure of natural study and tourism activities at Peacock Tower because the female tiger "Sonsa" is living and giving birth in the observation tower area. The tiger cub is less than one month old, a period requiring the mother's primary care and protection from disturbance. Any disruption could affect the tigress's natural behavior, especially her protective instincts over her cub and territory, which could cause stress leading her to abandon her cub. Such disturbance also poses safety risks to visitors studying nature around the Peacock Tower.

After consideration, Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary decided to close the natural study and tourism area around Peacock Tower starting 21 February 2026 to prevent harm to visitors from the tigress's territorial and maternal behaviors and to avoid disturbing the cub-rearing area.

They ask for cooperation in not parking vehicles between km 5 and km 14 along the route from Thung Faek Unit to the sanctuary office. Visitors can still tour the museum and the memorial as usual. Apologies are extended for any inconvenience caused.

Thanks for the information from the Facebook page Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary.
