A 62-year-old man claims he bent down to pick up his phone and did not intend to drive his pickup truck into the dining table of his 34-year-old wife’s drinking group, injuring seven people. Police remain unconvinced and are conducting an investigation.
On 3 Mar 2026 GMT+7, it was reported that Mr. Somron, aged 62, drove a white pickup truck into a dining table at a restaurant located at Ban Saito 5 Tai, Chanthophet Subdistrict, Ban Kruat District, Buriram Province. The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. on 2 Mar 2026 GMT+7.
The collision caused injuries to seven people dining together, two of whom were seriously hurt. Among the injured was Miss Phensri, 34, the wife of the 62-year-old driver. Many at the table and relatives of the injured believe the cause was Mr. Somron’s jealousy because Phensri distanced herself from him and started seeing a police officer, who was also present at the table during the incident.
Mr. Somron, the driver, insists that he lost control while bending down to pick up a phone that had fallen inside the vehicle. He denies any jealousy, saying he is aware of his age and has accepted that his wife may be involved with others. He added they had separated 15 days prior.
Police remain skeptical and are investigating whether the act was deliberate, especially since the pickup truck has first-class insurance that could be related to the incident. Authorities will continue to gather evidence and, if intentional harm is confirmed, charges such as attempted murder could apply. Initially, the driver faces charges of reckless driving causing injury.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kai (a pseudonym), 42, a local resident living opposite the scene, said he believes it was intentional because the driver specifically aimed the vehicle at the table. He noted that the truck could have hit his own parked vehicle nearby but instead slowed down briefly before ramming into the table forcefully.
Similarly, Mr. A (a pseudonym), also 42 and a local resident, said the couple met through a popular local dice game played at funerals or under trees. They later decided to live together. He acknowledged that Mr. Somron loved this woman deeply, explaining that Somron is usually calm and not quick-tempered, which makes his actions surprising.
In an interview, Mrs. Somphian, 63, mother of Miss Phensri, said that Mr. Somron and her daughter had an on-and-off relationship but treated her with respect, always calling her 'mother'. She said she did not know the private details of their situation. After the incident, Mr. Somron called to inform her about the serious accident involving multiple injuries.
Mrs. Somphian admitted she is worried about her daughter because she does not know what Mr. Somron is thinking at the moment and cannot predict his intentions. However, she has tried to comfort her daughter and urged her to stay calm.
