The Army clarifies that the Thai-Cambodian border situation is not worrisome. There are no signs of escalating conflict. Troop deployments are adjusted according to circumstances, with soldiers assigned to guard and closely monitor the area.
On 10 Mar 2026, Major General Winthai Suwaree, Army spokesperson, addressed societal concerns about the Thai-Cambodian border situation. He said the Army is closely monitoring activities in the area, maintaining a strong military presence. Based on current assessments, there are no signs of imminent escalation of conflict.
Regarding the Chong Sam Tat area in Sisaket Province, Thai troops observed Cambodian soldiers approaching the barbed wire fence with provocative behavior and frequent filming of inflammatory content. Thai forces have issued several warnings. On 8 Mar 2026, Thai soldiers fired warning shots into the air to prevent intrusion and control the situation according to rules of engagement. Troops in the area continue vigilant surveillance. Preliminary assessment indicates the Cambodian forces involved are new recruits lacking experience and discipline.
In the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani Province, reports of Cambodian soldiers digging trenches or building defensive positions are consistent with standard military tactical fortification. After Cambodian troops were pushed back to their own territory, establishing defensive positions or operational bases there is a normal military practice to secure new areas. There is no cause for concern at this time.
Regarding some perceptions that Cambodia might reclaim territory, the Army spokesperson stated that if this occurs, it would likely be through diplomatic or bilateral mechanisms rather than military means. No clear military indications or signs have been found. Thailand continues to rely on resolving issues through existing bilateral frameworks, such as the Joint Border Commission (JBC). Currently, both sides adhere to joint statements from the GBC meeting that troops remain in their current positions until further discussions through relevant mechanisms.
Adjustments to reduce Thai troop numbers in some border areas are operational, based on the situation and unit rotation cycles. This allows some personnel to return to regular duties. However, troops remain deployed to guard and continuously monitor the area.
Intelligence data shows no signs or indicators pointing to a large-scale clash as some have speculated. From a military perspective, Cambodia currently lacks sufficient advantage to use force against Thailand. Thai preparedness extends beyond border units, suggesting that any Cambodian military action would likely result in greater harm to Cambodia than to Thailand. Therefore, the current situation is not concerning. Nonetheless, commanders emphasize that all units must perform their duties with caution and vigilance.
At present, the border situation is under close control. Thailand maintains its approach of resolving issues through cooperation and dialogue between the two countries, while sustaining military readiness to ensure security and safety for local residents.
