Sparks from Welding Cause Fire at Car Scrap Yard in Chonburi, Damaging Over 50 Vehicles

A fire broke out inside a car parts dismantling yard in Chonburi, damaging over 50 vehicles. The owner said the cause was sparks from a welder that flew onto grass and car wrecks, which then ignited and spread. The extent of the damage has not yet been assessed.

At 16:40 on 11 March, Police Lieutenant Colonel Boonsita Hasin, Deputy Investigator at Mueang Chonburi Police Station, received a report of a fire at a yard in Na Pa subdistrict, Mueang district, Chonburi province. She promptly went to investigate and coordinated firefighting vehicles: one from Nong Mai Daeng, one from the city municipality, one from Ban Suan, one from Military Circle 14, and one from Don Hua Lo municipality.

At the scene, the large yard buys and auctions car wrecks to dismantle and sell parts. There were many car wrecks parked. The fire had spread fiercely, burning grass beside the yard and severely damaging car wrecks. Firefighters sprayed water for over an hour before the fire was extinguished. More than 50 car wrecks were found damaged.

When interviewed, Mr. Kritsada Khanankaeo, 48, the yard owner who was injured by flying sparks, said a worker was welding shelves when sparks flew onto the grass and car wrecks, causing a rapidly spreading fire that could not be controlled. The damage costs have not yet been estimated.
