Fuel Shortage Crisis: Surge in Vehicles Switching to LPG, Drivers Cite Convenience and No Waiting

More people are having LPG systems installed in their cars following the energy crisis and petrol shortages. A workshop reports prices starting in the tens of thousands of baht, depending on size and brand.

On 18 Mar 2026 GMT+7, reporters visited an LPG installation workshop after learning that more people are installing gas systems due to the petrol shortage crisis making refueling difficult. This aligns with public feedback that, despite many petrol stations, fuel is hard to find.

Interviewing Mr. Warakorn Sukjam, owner of an LPG installation workshop in Tha Chang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chanthaburi Province, it was revealed that since the petrol crisis began, many more people have sought LPG installation compared to before the war and fuel shortages. Currently, customers come daily for installations, with prices ranging from tens of thousands up to over 30,000 baht depending on size and brand.

Most vehicles brought for installation are common market cars or family vehicles used in the city. Customers interested in pricing can visit Tum Auto Gas workshop, located near Ban Khom Temple in Tha Chang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chanthaburi Province.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jirayut Putiwongpanich, who had his car fitted with LPG, said it is much more convenient now. He no longer has to queue or worry about fuel running out anywhere. Although there are many petrol stations, fuel remains hard to find. He urged the government to better manage the economy.

Ms. Pinyapat Pimwong, who came to refuel her gas, said that filling LPG is now quite convenient and does not require long waiting times.
