Wat Maprao Sung in Uthai Thani highlights its "charcoal crematorium" to overcome the oil shortage crisis. The kind abbot announced, "No oil? Come cremate here," hoping to assist families by conducting ceremonies according to their faith.
On 19 Mar 2026 GMT+7, reporters reported that most temples in Uthai Thani province that had modernized their crematoriums to electric or oil systems are now facing severe problems. Especially those using oil systems, as there is currently a critical oil shortage, causing difficulties for families unable to conduct cremation ceremonies as usual. Amid this crisis, an interesting story emerges at Wat Maprao Sung (also known as Wat Wang Boraphet), one of the few temples in the area preserving traditional wisdom.
Phra Ajarn Mayom, the abbot of Wat Maprao Sung, revealed that while other temples have switched to modern technology, Wat Maprao Sung continues to use a "traditional charcoal crematorium" which means it is not affected by the oil shortage or scarcity at all.
Phra Ajarn Mayom stated that although charcoal cremations may take slightly longer than electric or oil systems—averaging about 3-4 hours depending on the size of the deceased—he assures that this method meets standards and operates smoothly. Because of this, Wat Maprao Sung has announced through the media to help people facing difficulties. If any temple using oil-based cremation cannot proceed, or families are concerned about obtaining oil, the temple welcomes monks and families from all areas.
They can hold funeral ceremonies at the temple immediately, as it has ample space, or conduct the ceremony elsewhere and bring the body to be cremated here only. Regarding costs, Phra Ajarn Mayom kindly concluded, "It is according to the faith of the families," as the temple aims to fully assist those in need.
