21-Year-Old Man Shot Dead While Awaiting Military Conscription at Khukhan District Office

A brazen attacker shot a 21-year-old man who had returned home to enlist in the military, killing him in front of the Khukhan District Office in Sisaket Province. Relatives were shocked as they described the moment of the shooting. The victim was waiting to draw the conscription lottery. They appealed to police to quickly identify and prosecute the perpetrator for the crime.

At 16:30 on 5 April 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Praphat Yensungnoen, an investigating officer,from Khukhan Police Station,Sisaket Province, received a report of a shooting at the front of the Khukhan District Office with two injured persons. He immediately went to the scene and coordinated with local administrative officials and rescue teams.

Upon arrival, rescue personnel had already takenthe injured to Khukhan Hospital. The injured were identified as Mr. Nawakon Kamphong, 21, who was shot under the right breast, and Mr. Phiphat Pongsuwan, 15, who was shot in the left heel.Additionally, two vehicles at the scene had been shot: a black Toyota pickup truck with a cabin, registered in Khon Kaen, which had bullet marks on the alloy wheels, and a bronze-colored Toyota four-door pickup truck,

registered in Bangkok, with two bullet holes in the windshield and another bullet hole on the side.,,

Later, reporters visited Khukhan Hospital and learned that Mr. Nawakon Kamphong, who was critically injured, had died. Meanwhile, Mr. Phiphat Pongsuwan's condition was reported as stable.

Ms. Rattanaporn Srimas, 32, owner of one of the vehicles hit by stray bullets, said she was at the conscription site when she heard about three gunshots. Initially, she did not think the bullets would hit her car until relatives sent her photos via mobile phone, which shocked her greatly. She never expected such an incident to occur at the Khukhan District Office. She had brought her nephew for military conscription that day and remained in shock, barely able to speak. She emphasized she had no enemies and did not understand the cause of the shooting.

Mr. Peeraphong Sawangphop, 37, a relative of the deceased, said his younger brother was friendly, had no conflicts with anyone, and had just arrived by motorcycle from Bangkok with his girlfriend to undergo the military conscription lottery.

Before the shooting, officials had called in those to be conscripted. Shortly after, about three gunshots were heard. When the noise stopped, they found his younger brother, who was waiting to draw his conscription card, had been shot under the left breast and later died. He described the act as extremely brazen and urged authorities to swiftly apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators.

Police initially collected evidence at the scene, then interviewed witnesses and are tracking suspects for questioning. They estimate about two suspects were involved and are working urgently to arrest and bring them to justice.
