Chiang Mai Still Tops Drunk Driving Cases During Songkran Festival 2026, Followed by Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan

The Director-General of the Probation Department revealed probation statistics on the third day of the 2026 Songkran Festival, reporting a cumulative total of 1,613 drunk driving cases. Chiang Mai, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan remain the top three provinces with the highest numbers.

On 13 April 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Piya Raksakul, Director-General of the Probation Department, disclosed statistics on cases ordered by the court for probation on 12 April. Due to court closures in several areas, only 140 cases entered the probation process that day, comprising 133 drunk driving cases, accounting for 95%, and 7 drug-impaired driving cases, making up 5%.

Accumulated statistics over the three days from 10 to 12 April show a total of 1,750 cases, divided into 1,613 drunk driving cases, accounting for 92.2%, 134 drug-impaired driving cases at 7.6%, and 3 reckless driving cases representing 0.2%.

The top three provinces with the highest drunk driving case counts remain unchanged: Chiang Mai with 246 cases, Nonthaburi with 147 cases, and Samut Prakan with 145 cases.

Additionally, the Director-General of the Probation Department emphasized strict measures under the campaign “Probation Cares: Together Creating a Safe Society to Reduce Road Accidents.” He pledged ongoing monitoring of the situation to prevent and reduce losses during the 2026 Songkran Festival. He instructed probation offices nationwide to integrate cooperation with all sector partners through the involvement of probation volunteers. Offenders under probation participated in community service supporting officials at 35 public service points, with 663 participants. They also engaged in one session of landscape improvement at frequent accident sites with 17 participants, one session of education on traffic laws and the dangers of alcohol with 214 participants, and real-time CCTV monitoring of driving behavior involving 10 participants.

These activities reflect the Probation Department’s commitment to preventing and reducing road accidents alongside enforcing legal measures and fostering a sense of responsibility with the message “Don’t Drink and Drive.” This aims to reduce risky behaviors leading to accidents so that people across the country can celebrate the Songkran Festival safely and joyfully.
