Third Day of Songkran’s 7 Dangerous Days Sees 24 Deaths Lampang Records Highest Accident Count

During the third day of the 7 Dangerous Days Songkran 2026 campaign, 24 deaths have been reported. The top causes of accidents are speeding and drunk driving. The Road Safety Operation Center (RSOC) has urged provinces to strictly enforce laws, focusing on controlling alcohol sales to those under 20 years old, using local mechanisms to deter risky road behaviors and unsafe Songkran water play.

Today (13 Apr 2026) at 10:30 AM at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), the Road Safety Operation Center (RSOC) released statistics on road accidents during the 2026 Songkran festival for 12 April 2026. There were 171 accidents, 169 injuries, and 24 deaths. Accumulated over the first three days (10–12 Apr 2026), there were 515 accidents, 486 injuries, and 95 deaths. Thirty provinces reported zero deaths.

The RSOC has instructed the provinces and Bangkok to continue rigorous law enforcement, strictly controlling alcohol sales according to the law, especially prohibiting sales to those under 20. The focus is on local surveillance mechanisms to monitor, inspect, and deter risky behaviors before leaving an area. Emergency response teams are prepared to immediately assist accident victims to ensure rapid aid.

Mr. Phadungsak Sarujikamjornwat, Inspector General of the Ministry of Transport and spokesperson for the RSOC, reported that on 12 April 2026, the third day of the “Safe Driving, Reduce Speed, Reduce Accidents” campaign, there were 171 accidents, 169 injuries, and 24 deaths. The leading causes were speeding (46.20%) and drunk driving (24.56%). Motorcycles accounted for 77.17% of accidents, mostly occurring on straight roads (81.29%), local administrative and village roads (39.77%), and national highways (34.50%). The peak accident time was 15:01–18:00 (24.56%). Most casualties were aged 20–29 (22.80%). The province with the most accidents was Suphanburi (10), the highest injuries were in Phrae (9), and the most deaths in Bangkok (3).

Accumulated over the first three days of the campaign (10–12 Apr 2026), there were 515 accidents, 486 injuries, and 95 deaths. Lampang province recorded the highest number of accidents (25) and injuries (25). Bangkok had the highest number of deaths (6). Thirty provinces reported zero deaths.
Today, 13 April, is Songkran Day when many people participate in water celebrations, especially on roads for water play and travel. Alcohol consumption for socializing is common. The RSOC has coordinated with provinces and Bangkok to strictly enforce the ten key legal measures to deter risky road behaviors and accidents, especially in water play and tourist areas. Risky water play on roads is prohibited. Authorities facilitate safe travel home and monitor alcohol sales, strictly forbidding sales to those under 20. If underage drinking leads to injury or death, investigations and legal actions will target shops, suppliers, and guardians. Business hours for venues are enforced. Community and family checkpoints intensify monitoring and deterrence of risky driving behaviors, emphasizing warnings before accidents occur to prevent road accidents. Provinces are also preparing communication and emergency response systems to coordinate aid efficiently, ensuring ambulances and emergency vehicles reach accident sites quickly to transport victims to hospitals.

Mr. Sarawut Wongsakulwiwat, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) and secretary of the RSOC committee, stated that recent road accident statistics show most incidents stem from risky behaviors of drivers and road users. The RSOC has urged provinces to publicize the importance of assessing drivers’ physical and mental readiness before driving, advising rest or avoiding driving if unfit. They also promote cautious Songkran water play, advising against splashing water directly at motorcycles as it may cause loss of control and accidents. Playing water in the middle of roads is discouraged due to collision risk. Avoiding sitting or standing on pickup truck beds during water play is recommended, as falls during movement can cause accidents.

Finally, citizens who experience or witness accidents can report incidents 24 hours a day via hotline 1784 or the DDPM’s Line account “ปภ.รับแจ้งเหตุ1784” by adding the Line ID @1784DDPM for prompt assistance coordination.
