Khon Kaen is set to lockdown the city from 15:30 onwards to manage the massive crowds on the first day of the Khao Niao Road Songkran Festival. Sri Chan Road will be closed along its entire length from Pratu Muang Intersection to Tiao Hong Intersection. A full one-way traffic system will be enforced on three main routes to improve traffic flow and clear the way for emergency vehicles.
At 11:00 on 13 April 2026, reporters observed the Songkran water festival atmosphere in Khon Kaen province. Police Colonel Yosawat Kaewsueptanin, Superintendent of Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station, along with Police Lieutenant Colonel Supornchai Wongphakun, Deputy Superintendent (Traffic), led traffic police officers in installing informational signs, placing barricades, and deploying traffic cones to designate one-way traffic routes within the inner water play area of Khon Kaen city. These preparations aim to accommodate both Thai and foreign tourists coming to join the Songkran tradition on Khao Niao Road on its first day.
Authorities will close traffic along the entire Sri Chan Road from the Pratu Muang Intersection to the Tiao Hong Intersection, covering nearly 3 kilometers. This area will be used for the Khao Niao Road Songkran activities from today until 15 April. The road closure and implementation of the one-way traffic system around the city will officially begin from 15:30 onward on three main routes.
The first route is at Tiao Hong Intersection (where Na Mueang Road meets Sri Chan Road). Traffic will flow one-way past Bang Lamphu Market, To Rung Market, Fairy Plaza Department Store, and then turn left at Laenadee Intersection (near Wat Klang School).
The second route runs along Laenadee Road, looping left along Laenadee Road up to the intersection with Klang Mueang Road (Ban Ya Intersection), passing Wat That Phra Aram Luang, Suan Sanuk School, Kalyanawat School, Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station, and ending at Sri Chan and Klang Mueang Road Intersection (Bank of Thailand Intersection).
The third route is Ruenrom Road, which operates one-way traffic toward the train station, passing Rodfai Road and turning right at the Northeast University intersection to connect with Mittraphap Road.
Police Colonel Yosawat Kaewsueptanin stated that this system not only enhances mobility for tourists but also creates a special corridor for ambulances and emergency vehicles to promptly respond in the area under strict security measures. Visitors coming to play water on Khao Niao Road and the inner city area are advised to use Prachasamosorn Road, turning onto Klang Mueang and Na Mueang Roads to enter the designated one-way traffic system.
If visitors prefer not to drive into the inner city, they can park at three designated service points: Kalyanawat School, Wat Klang Municipal School, and Wat Wuttaram. Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station has coordinated preparations to accommodate tourists fully this year for their convenience.
