A dramatic incident in Mukdahan Province involved an 80-year-old man driving a pickup truck into a bank at a red-light intersection in front of the Nikom Kham Soi District Office. Three police officers were injured, one critically. The driver’s blood alcohol level was 101 milligrams percent.
On 22 April 2026, reporters reported that at 11:50 a.m., a pickup truck registered in Mukdahan lost control and crashed into the Government Savings Bank branch at the red-light intersection in front of the Nikom Kham Soi District Office. This caused damage to several properties and injured three police officers.
At the scene, a green Nissan pickup truck was found with severe front-end damage after crashing through the bank’s front door, which was completely shattered. Also damaged were one Vespa motorcycle, a ticket dispensing machine, and the bank’s internal systems. Blood stains and spilled engine oil were found on the ground.
Preliminary witness accounts stated that the vehicle crashed violently into the bank’s front, causing widespread damage. Three police officers were injured in the incident, one critically. Rescue workers had already transported the seriously injured officer to the hospital.
The driver was identified as Mr. Banyat, aged 80, a resident of Nong Nok Khian village, Romklao subdistrict, Nikom Kham Soi district, Mukdahan Province. He was being questioned by police. A breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol concentration was as high as 101 milligrams percent.
The driver’s grandson revealed that before the incident, his grandfather told family members he was going to drive the vehicle, which was normally in poor condition and used only on the farm. It was never driven on main roads. When they received a call about the crash into the bank, they rushed to check. He also said his grandfather is usually forgetful.
Authorities are currently conducting further investigations and will proceed with legal action accordingly.
