The Royal Thai Army disclosed that at the Chong Chom border, "Cambodian soldiers" provoked by approaching the Thai barbed wire line in violation of agreements. While escorting a diplomatic delegation into the area, Thai soldiers fired three warning firecrackers and issued a protest letter, stating this was an attempt to create an image of Thai aggression.
On 29 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Major General Winthai Suwaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, revealed the situation near the Chong Chom border in Surin Province. The unit controlling the area received coordination from the Thai–Cambodian border liaison team that at 10:00 a.m., Cambodian forces would bring a diplomatic delegation to inspect an area near the Thai deployment line. Thai forces were aware and closely monitored the situation.
Later, it was found that Cambodian soldiers provoked by approaching the Thai barbed wire despite prior warnings and understanding of the joint agreement. The provocation continued repeatedly, so Thai forces fired three firecrackers as warning signals per protocol, causing the Cambodian side to withdraw from the barbed wire area.
The unit reported the incident to the Suranaree Task Force and the 2nd Army Area Command to proceed with formal steps, including issuing a protest letter to Cambodia regarding the violation of the joint statement agreements.
The Royal Thai Army spokesperson emphasized that such incidents should not occur as they demonstrate disrespect for international agreements and attempts to create a scenario portraying Thailand as violent.
He affirmed this portrayal is untrue; on the contrary, Thailand strictly adheres to rules and agreements. However, Thailand reserves the right to self-defense under international principles to protect its citizens and sovereignty in all circumstances.
