Thai Local Liquor and Craft Beer Associations Urge Review and Delay of Retail Alcohol Tax Enforcement

Taepiphop, along with representatives from the Thai Local Liquor Association and the Craft Beer Association, submitted a letter to members of the House of Representatives, urging a review and delay in enforcing the retail alcohol tax to prevent operators from bearing excessive costs.

On 14 May 2026 GMT+7, reporters reported that Mr. Taepiphop Limjitrakorn, a member of parliament from the People's Party, together with representatives from the Thai Local Liquor Association and the Craft Beer Association, submitted a letter of demand requesting consideration to adjust the tax structure and the criteria for market surveys and reference pricing to members of the House of Representatives.

The demands pointed out that the new announcement by the Excise Department regarding the criteria for market surveys and collection of retail price data considers the sales location when determining prices. This affects the reference price calculation and negatively impacts small operators, who must bear increased tax expenses. This severely affects costs, operations, and price management, as well as investment and expansion in the liquor industry, which can help stimulate local economies and promote tourism.

Therefore, the Thai Local Liquor Association proposed that the Excise Department review and delay enforcement of the retail price survey criteria and reference price during discussions on appropriate and fair tax collection methods for all operators. This would prevent operators from shouldering excessive costs and allow them to allocate budgets toward product development instead.

They also suggested reconsidering the excise tax structure for alcoholic beverages by separating categories between small and large operators to reduce obstacles and promote fair competition. They called for the cancellation of the retail price tax collection, arguing that producers do not set retail prices themselves and thus should not be responsible for this tax expense.
