2nd Army Region Receives Uncle Yont, Thai Citizen, Safely Returned to Family

"2nd Army Region" takes custody "Uncle Yont" Mr. Yont Sainoi, 58, a Thai citizen, has safely returned to his family.

On 15 May 2026 at the Chong Sa-ngam permanent border checkpoint in Phu Sing District, Si Sa Ket Province, Lieutenant General Nid Narong, Deputy Chief of Staff of Cambodia's 4th Military Region, acting as Chairman of the Regional Border Committee (RBC) Secretariat for the 4th Military Region, handed over Mr. Yont Sainoi, 58, a Thai national from Kan Truat Ramuan Subdistrict, Prasat District, Surin Province, to Major General Kampanat Waphansu, Chief of Staff of the 2nd Army Region and Chairman of the RBC Secretariat for the 2nd Army Region.

This repatriation resulted from local-level cooperation mechanisms between the 2nd Army Region and Cambodia's 4th Military Region. After Mr. Yont Sainoi went into the forest near the Surin provincial border to forage and went missing on 25 April 2026, family members and local authorities—including civilians, police, and military—joined in searching for him.

When it was reasonably believed that he was lost along the border area, the 2nd Army Region utilized its cooperation mechanism with Cambodia's 4th Military Region to investigate. They confirmed that Mr. Yont had been prosecuted by Cambodian authorities for illegal border crossing at the primary court in Oddar Meanchey Province. Upon learning this, the 2nd Army Region formally notified the 4th Military Region to assist, leading to approval for his repatriation on 15 May 2026 at the Chong Sa-ngam permanent border checkpoint in Phu Sing District, Si Sa Ket Province.

This cooperation marks a significant achievement of the local border cooperation mechanism, playing a crucial role in building trust, reducing tensions, and maintaining a positive atmosphere of understanding between the people and security agencies of both countries. It aligns with the spirit of the 3rd Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on 27 December 2025, which emphasized promoting cooperation and easing border tensions.

The 2nd Army Region expressed gratitude to all involved units and agencies for their full coordination efforts, which led to the successful and orderly repatriation of the Thai citizen.

Initial health checks found Mr. Yont Sainoi in normal physical condition. After the handover, the 2nd Army Region will arrange for his safe return to his family and coordinate with all relevant parties to ensure his welfare, health, and to reassure his family and the public.
