On 3 June 2026, progress was reported in the case of a suspect breaking into a female tourist's room on Koh Samet, Rayong Province. Police Lieutenant Worathat Ruangrit, Deputy Superintendent (Investigation) of the Phe Police Station, Rayong Province, received a report of an intruder entering a female tourist's room inside a resort at Ao Cho, Village No. 4, Phe Subdistrict, Mueang District, Rayong Province. He coordinated with patrol officers from Phe Police Station and tourism police to investigate.
At the scene, officers found Ms. Kai (alias), 32, a female tourist, in a state of severe shock. Authorities inspected the scene and reviewed footage from the resort's CCTV cameras, eventually identifying the suspect as Mr. Natthapong, or Lek, 31, a construction worker at a nearby resort site.
Later, authorities successfully tracked down Mr. Natthapong. At the time of arrest, he was found gambling online on his mobile phone. He was taken into custody for interrogation and legal proceedings.
During questioning, Mr. Natthapong confessed that upon seeing the victim staying in a room near where he worked, he developed sexual urges. He took advantage of the nighttime to sneak into the room intending to commit rape. However, the victim woke up and shouted for help, causing him to panic and flee the scene.
Ms. Kai revealed she traveled with about 15 friends and stayed in separate rooms within the resort. While resting in her room, she heard unusual noises behind it and then saw the man attempting to force the door open. She screamed for help, causing the intruder to quickly run away before being captured by police later.
Initially, authorities charged the suspect with attempted rape, nighttime trespassing, and unauthorized online gambling involving property. He was handed over to the investigation officers for legal action.
After the incident, the resort issued a statement clarifying that the perpetrator was not an employee. They affirmed their commitment to tourist safety, noting comprehensive CCTV coverage across the premises and that they did not neglect the incident. The resort has also tightened measures to screen and monitor outsiders entering and leaving the resort to reassure tourists.
