Two Dead After Consuming Poisonous Mushrooms in Mae Hong Son, Suffer Severe Vomiting and Diarrhea

Villagers in Mae Hong Son collected poisonous mushrooms and ate them, causing severe vomiting and diarrhea. They were rushed to the hospital, but two people died within a close timeframe. The mushrooms are suspected to be white Phlog mushroom or Rangak mushroom.

On 3 Jun 2026 GMT+7, Sergeant Nang Wansung, the village headman of Napa Pak, Mok Champae Subdistrict, Mueang District, Mae Hong Son Province, revealed that as the rainy season begins, various types of mushrooms appear. Most villagers rely on gathering wild mushrooms as a livelihood, both for sale and personal consumption. Recently, two men in the village died after consuming poisonous mushrooms. The first was a 38-year-old man who died on 27 May after collecting mushrooms from the forest and cooking them alone. Shortly after eating, he experienced severe vomiting and diarrhea and was rushed to Srisangwan Hospital in Mae Hong Son, then transferred to Maharaj Hospital in Chiang Mai, where he later died.

The second case involved a 45-year-old man who died on 2 Jun 2026 GMT+7 after eating poisonous mushrooms from the same source as the first victim. Following consumption, he suffered severe nausea and vomiting. He was taken to Srisangwan Hospital in Mae Hong Son and then transferred to a hospital in Chiang Mai for treatment before passing away. It is suspected that the poisonous mushrooms consumed were white Phlog mushroom or Rangak mushroom, which closely resemble the edible Goose Egg mushroom. The victims likely mistook them for Goose Egg mushrooms, which are safe to eat, and prepared them, leading to their deaths.

Meanwhile, the Mae Hong Son Provincial Public Health Office issued a warning during the rainy season as many people enter the forest to gather seasonal mushrooms for consumption or sale. However, many mushrooms are poisonous to varying degrees. They urge the public to carefully verify the mushrooms they collect, as consuming poisonous mushrooms can be fatal. There is currently no specific antidote for mushroom poisoning, so patients who consume large amounts of toxic mushrooms risk death due to internal organ tissue damage. The office strongly advises Mae Hong Son residents to exercise extreme caution when collecting and consuming mushrooms.
