A 29-year-old man, distressed, accelerated his car through a barrier and plunged into a pond inside Chulalongkorn University after asking his mother for help renting a condo for 27,000 baht per month but failing. He was taken to the hospital and is now in stable condition.
At 05:45 on 18 June 2026 GMT+7, Police Lieutenant Tai Sawangjit, Investigation Officer of Pathumwan Police Station, received a report of a man attempting suicide by driving his car into a swimming pond inside Chulalongkorn University, Soi Chula 12, Wang Mai subdistrict, Pathumwan district, Bangkok. He went to the scene along with forensic officers and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation.
At the scene, inside the pond, a white Toyota Yaris sedan with Bangkok license plates was found almost fully submerged, with only the roof visible. On the driver's seat was Mr. Chinapat (surname withheld), 29 years old, submerged and gasping for air. He was rescued by opening the car door and pulled out for first aid before being taken to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital. His condition is stable.
Investigation revealed that before the incident, the driver, Mr. Chinapat, had a conflict with his mother because he wanted her to help rent a condominium for about 27,000 baht per month. They failed to reach an agreement, causing him distress and frustration. He then drove into the university, heading toward the pond in front of the Sasaphol Building. Security officers tried to stop him and urged him to stop, but he accelerated, crashing through barriers and bushes before driving into the pond.
No other injuries were reported in the incident. The driver was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Police are continuing to investigate the facts, including assessing his mental state and the motivation behind the incident in detail.
