"Chong Chom Customs" launched a broad crackdown on illegally imported foreign snacks and beverages in central Korat, revealing a shocking ongoing smuggling operation with products lacking FDA approval and nearing expiration dates.
Mr. Prasit Deejongjaroen stated that Mr. Phanthong Loykulnan, Director-General of the Customs Department, Ms. Suntareeya Tawichaprasit, Deputy Director-General, and Ms. Lalita Atthapimol, Director of Customs Region 2, have instructed Chong Chom Customs checkpoint, responsible for three lower northeastern provinces—Surin, Buriram, and Korat, a major economic cluster—to strictly monitor consumer goods that may harm public health and potentially increase future medical costs, as well as to ensure fairness for honest business operators.
Mr. Prasit added that following these directives, Chong Chom Customs closely monitored high-risk products and, upon gathering sufficient evidence, filed for search warrants from the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Court to conduct a comprehensive raid and seize foreign snacks and beverages at two prominent stores in Nakhon Ratchasima, successfully.
Mr. Prasit shared concerns that both targeted stores are large, well-known establishments resembling small department stores, operating for many years and popular among the local affluent community. However, over 25,000 items including snacks, candies, chewing gum, soft drinks, teas, and coffee were smuggled in from abroad without customs clearance and lacked safety certification from the FDA. Additionally, many products nearing expiration were mixed in, with unknown quantities already sold.
"Ending illegal trade at the retail level helps reduce the illicit supply chain because when retailers cannot sell illegal products, they stop purchasing from unlawful importers. Retailers must also verify their suppliers' legal compliance and product standards to help protect society. Likewise, the public should check for certification marks such as TISI or FDA to avoid exploitation by dishonest operators," Mr. Prasit concluded.
