On 26 June 2026, after the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) collaborated with the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) to arrest Mr. Rungrueang Thimabut, Phuket Provincial Secretary, under a warrant from the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases Region 9. He is accused of acting as an intermediary to solicit money to assist with local government civil service exam appointments.
Latest reports say that several local media outlets have closely followed the situation at Phuket Provincial Police Station after officers from Division 4, Anti-Corruption Police Bureau, brought Mr. Rungrueang in for questioning.
Regarding the case, Mr. Rungrueang is accused of soliciting bribes from three victims who were candidates for local government civil service exams, demanding 300,000 baht each, totaling 900,000 baht. He allegedly claimed the money would be given to officials at the Department of Local Administration to help secure exam appointments. The incident took place in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province.
It was also reported that the Anti-Corruption Police Bureau officers took Mr. Rungrueang from his home around 7:00 p.m. before bringing him to Phuket Provincial Police Station for interrogation.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Jaroonkiat Pankaew, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, stated that Mr. Rungrueang was indeed taken into custody after investigations linked him to soliciting benefits related to civil service exams. However, he could not disclose full details or the timing of the incident as the investigation and evidence collection are ongoing.
Following the completion of questioning on the morning of 27 June 2026, officials will hold an official press conference to provide further information.
Meanwhile, during the questioning, Mr. Chalermpong Saengdee, Member of Parliament from the People's Party representing Phuket Constituency 2, arrived at Phuket Police Station to observe the authorities' proceedings.
