In Narathiwat, attackers planted a homemade bomb inside a gas cylinder weighing over 70 kg to ambush a Go-Log Volunteer Defense vehicle but mistakenly hit a Malaysian sedan, severely damaging it and injuring two people.
At 11:45 a.m. on 29 June 2026, Pol. Col. Phakawat Wansanuk, superintendent of Tak Bai Police Station, Narathiwat, received a report of an explosion on the Sapom-Tak Bai Road near Ban Praiwan, Village No.7, Praiwan Subdistrict. Two people were injured and one sedan was damaged. He, along with Pol. Maj. Gen. Prayong Khotsakha, chief of Narathiwat Provincial Police, bomb disposal officers from the Narathiwat Provincial Police, forensic officials, and police and military personnel, promptly went to investigate.
At the scene, a bronze-colored Proton sedan with Malaysian license plates was found stranded on the right lane next to the roadside guardrail. The blast damaged the windshield, hood, and doors. Two Malaysians inside were injured and quickly taken to Narathiwat Rajanagarindra Hospital for emergency treatment.
Investigators found a two-meter-deep, four-meter-wide crater with scattered fragments from the homemade bomb inside a red cooking gas cylinder weighing no less than 70 kg. The bomb was detonated remotely by radio and debris was scattered across the road. Officials collected these as evidence.
Investigation revealed that before the blast, an armored pickup of the Volunteer Defense from the Su-ngai Kolok District Office was passing the area after returning troops from training at the local training center in Tha Sap Subdistrict, Mueang District, Yala Province. Four personnel were headed back to the Su-ngai Kolok District Office. While traveling in the right lane, a Malaysian car in the left lane attempted to overtake the Volunteer Defense vehicle. At that moment, attackers hidden nearby remotely detonated the bomb placed inside an underground pipe beneath the road, causing a loud explosion that damaged the vehicle and injured the occupants. Authorities believe the attack was conducted by local insurgent members.
