Devotees mourn "Luang Por Lek," a meditative monk who passed away peacefully in a seated meditation posture at Wat Pa Non Sa-at, fulfilling the wish he had previously hinted at.
On 7 Jul 2026 GMT+7, reports stated that on 6 Jul 2026 GMT+7, a monk peacefully passed away while seated in meditation at Wat Pa Non Sa-at, Tha Yiam Subdistrict, Chok Chai District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The monk was identified as Phra Puttasaro, also known as Luang Por Lek Ngern Wiset, aged 70. This event deeply moved devotees and the monastic community, as his passing aligned with the intention he had previously expressed.
Phra Ajahn Saenprach Panyakamo, abbot of Wat Pa Non Sa-at, shared background about Luang Por Lek, describing him as a deeply devoted monk who ordained to sincerely study the Dharma. He was humble, easygoing, and a vital helper in temple affairs, always assisting with preparations and maintaining order. During his approximately 4-5 years residing at the temple, Luang Por Lek was in excellent health and never missed his monastic duties, including sweeping the temple grounds and walking over two kilometers daily for alms rounds without showing any signs of illness.
On the day of the incident, while preparing to don his robes for the morning alms round, Luang Por Lek sat down in front of the restroom and peacefully passed away in that seated posture. Phra Ajahn Saenprach described this as "the best kind of death," a peaceful passing that many monks aspire to.
Phra Uan, a close temple disciple, added that Luang Por Lek was compassionate and beloved by villagers. He often mentioned that when his final moment came, he wished to pass away peacefully without suffering. The circumstances of his death perfectly fulfilled this long-held intention.
Ms. Sompong Pensuk, 53, a close relative, expressed her sorrow, recalling that Luang Por Lek had a kind nature and deep devotion to Buddhism throughout his life. Even before ordination, he often told family members he wished to depart quietly and peacefully. Seeing him pass in such a calm manner affirmed that he left comfortably and as he had hoped. Although the family feels sadness, they are also deeply moved by his peaceful passing.
Regarding religious rites, Phra Ajahn Saenprach Panyakamo, together with devotees, held a water-pouring funeral ceremony at 18:30 on 6 July 2026 GMT+7 at Wat Pa Non Sa-at. The cremation is scheduled for 12 July 2026 GMT+7 to respectfully send Luang Por Lek's spirit onward.
