Pathum Thani has declared a rabies outbreak zone in three districts and is conducting extensive vaccination in high-risk areas after a rabid stray dog aggressively attacked two people and ten dogs.
At 14:30 on 8 July 2026, at the Khu Bang Luang Subdistrict Administrative Organization in Lat Lum Kaeo District, Pathum Thani province, Mr. Kerikphon Buathong, Chief Executive of Khu Bang Luang Subdistrict Administrative Organization, along with Mr. Julachat Julaphet, Pathum Thani Livestock Officer, district officials, community leaders, village headmen, and village health volunteers, gathered to discuss measures for rabies surveillance and prevention in the area.
Following a report from the Public Health and Environment Department of Khu Bang Luang Subdistrict Administrative Organization about a suspicious male white stray dog of unknown age and owner entering Village 7 and Village 9 in Khu Bang Luang around 09:00 on 5 July 2026, the dog showed aggressive behavior, attacking seven local dogs and biting two residents. Livestock officers used a tranquilizer gun to capture the dog and quarantined it at the subdistrict office. The dog died around 08:00 on 6 July 2026. The Lat Lum Kaeo Livestock Office sent the dog's head for rabies testing.
A 2026 survey of dog and cat populations in Khu Bang Luang subdistrict found a total of 3,635 animals. Recently, the Pathum Thani Provincial Public Health Office received confirmation from the Livestock Office that the dog tested positive for rabies, a serious contagious disease under the 2015 Animal Epidemic Act that can spread to humans and other mammals.
Related agencies have declared a temporary rabies outbreak zone affecting mammals in Village 7 of Khu Bang Luang, Village 3 of Ra Haeng Subdistrict in Lat Lum Kaeo District, Village 8 of Bang Toei Subdistrict in Sam Khok District, and Village 6 of Bang Luang and Village 2 of Ban Chang Subdistricts in Mueang Pathum Thani District. This declaration is effective from 7 July to 5 August 2026.
Mr. Kerikphon Buathong, Chief Executive of Khu Bang Luang Subdistrict Administrative Organization, said proactive measures are underway to vaccinate animals in the high-risk areas where the rabid dog was seen in Villages 7 and 9 of Khu Bang Luang. The first vaccination dose was administered last Monday. According to regulations, four doses are required (one dose every four days). A meeting was called with livestock heads, community leaders, and all officials to monitor and observe for symptoms.
Residents are urged to report any abnormalities to the Khu Bang Luang Subdistrict Administrative Organization so that officials can vaccinate dogs at households. The two people bitten have received initial rabies vaccinations. The seven dogs bitten have been vaccinated and quarantined.
Mr. Julachat Julaphet, Pathum Thani Livestock Officer, added that following reports of rabies cases in Village 7, the province coordinated with local administrative organizations, public health, and community leaders to survey the area, identifying a white stray dog roaming Villages 7 and 9. The dog bit two people and ten other dogs. Officials are conducting mass vaccination within a 5-kilometer radius, focusing urgently on a 1-kilometer radius from where the dog resides. Notices and warnings have been posted to urge those exposed to seek immediate medical attention.
The Pathum Thani Public Health Office has issued warnings to residents in the control areas to strictly avoid contact with stray animals. If bitten, scratched, or in contact with suspicious animals, people should immediately wash wounds with soap, apply medication, quarantine the animal for observation, and promptly visit a doctor for rabies vaccination.
If residents find dead dogs or cats with unusual symptoms suggestive of rabies—such as agitation, restlessness, biting objects, stiffness, excessive salivation, or tongue hanging out—they should report to the Pathum Thani Livestock Office at 02-967-9770. Anyone who has been exposed to suspected infected animals should contact the Pathum Thani Public Health Office at 02-581-6454 ext. 305.
