Army spokesperson reports progress on the incident where a soldier stepped on a landmine. In Kantharalak, Sisaket Province, engineering troops and Humanitarian Mine Action Unit 3 cleared the area to safety and found 19 additional old PMN-1 mines.
On 18 July 2026, Major General Winthai Suwaree, Army spokesperson, updated on the incident where personnel were injured by stepping on a mine in Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province, on 17 July 2026. The incident occurred while personnel were conducting security operations and upgrading a border outpost. The site was a newly developed area for troop deployment that may not have been thoroughly surveyed for mines. During the most recent fighting, the Cambodian side did not use this area, which led to the personnel stepping on mines. The mines were old and degraded, causing malfunctioning mechanisms but still resulting in injuries.
Following the incident, engineering units and Humanitarian Mine Action Unit 3 (TMAC 3) inspected the site and found 19 old PMN-1 anti-personnel mines scattered around. The area has now been cordoned off and cleared to restore safety.
The Army spokesperson added that the 2nd Army Region has instructed all personnel involved in security upgrades to increase caution and area inspections, particularly in zones not yet surveyed or cleared of mines.
