Armed Attack and Bombing at Narathiwat Checkpoint Kills 5 Rangers

Shooting in Narathiwat An armed attack and grenade assault occurred at a ranger checkpoint in Narathiwat Province, initially reported to have caused five fatalities among personnel and two civilian injuries.

Sequence of events: assailants attacked and threw explosives at Bukhe Sami checkpoint.

On 22 July 2016, at about 18:45, six assailants used a black four-door pickup truck to carry out a shooting and grenade attack at the Bukhe Sami checkpoint, an area under the responsibility of Ranger Company 4509.

Initial reports state that five personnel were killed, including four ranger volunteers and one sergeant, and two civilians were seriously wounded, one of whom is a child approximately nine years old.

Following the attack, the assailants fled along Route 4055, the Tan Yong Mas–Dusungyo road. Gunfire was still heard intermittently in the area as authorities sealed off the scene and pursued the suspects.

1. Vehicles used

• Vehicle 1 (Lead): Red Honda Wave 110 motorcycle
• Vehicle 2 (Operational vehicle): Black Nissan four-door pickup truck
• Vehicle 3 (Follow-up): White Honda Wave motorcycle

2. Attire

• Six assailants were seen seated in the back of the pickup truck.
• They were dressed in black clothing and wore black brimmed hats.
