At 11:40 a.m. on 28 July 2026, Pol. Maj. Gen. Sinlert Sukhum, Commander of Phuket Provincial Police, was notified of an explosion-like sound inside the Phuket Municipal Waterworks on Damrong Road, Talad Yai Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District. The loud noise caused panic among local residents as it was heard throughout the area.
The commander then reported to the Phuket Governor and coordinated with Pol. Col. Chatree Chukaew, Superintendent of Mueang Phuket Police Station, who led police officers to investigate alongside Supachok Laongphet, Mayor of Phuket Municipality. The mayor ordered related officials to inspect the area immediately and mobilized water trucks to spray around the chlorine tank for safety. Police temporarily closed roads near the site to facilitate operations and protect passersby.
Later, Chotinrin Kerdsom, Phuket Governor, accompanied by Worath Surawadee from the Disaster Prevention Department, Siwat Rawangkul, Mueang Phuket District Chief, and officials inspected the exploded chlorine storage tank inside the Phuket Municipal Waterworks compound to assess the situation and closely monitor the response. Mueang Phuket Police closed roads along the route to allow firefighters to spray water, regaining control within just one hour.
Additionally, the municipality surveyed damage to homes affected by the blast. The Phuket Governor emphasized inter-agency coordination and urged swift containment of the situation. He instructed preventive measures to protect residents and the environment, prioritizing the safety of officials and local people first.
Supachok Laongphet, Mayor of Phuket Municipality, stated initially that the explosion involved a chlorine storage tank used in water production. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. He assured the public that the incident did not affect the water production system, which continues to operate normally, and urged people not to panic as the event posed no health risks despite an initial chemical odor.
