Tensions have risen along the Mae Sot border in Tak Province due to fighting in Myanmar. Gunfire continues to echo, and the village headman has urged residents to stay inside buildings and not leave the area after bullets struck 4-5 houses. Meanwhile, Ban Mae Kon Gen School revealed its emergency response plan in preparation for the situation.
At 14:00 on 2 August 2026, reporters reported ongoing fighting between Myanmar troops from the 22nd Infantry Brigade and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) at the Pa Sak base in Min La Pan Village, Myawaddy District, Kayin State, Myanmar, opposite Ban Huai Maha Wong and Ban Mae Kon Gen, Maha Wan Subdistrict, Mae Sot District, Tak Province.
In the early morning, 93mm caliber rounds were fired across the border, hitting more than 4-5 Thai houses and a temple. The gunfire has continued loudly across the Thai border for over an hour with no ceasefire. Heavy weapons, drones, and machine guns are involved in the exchange, but Myanmar forces have yet to capture the Pa Sak base from the Karen forces.
Ban Mae Kon Gen School posted on its Facebook page an emergency response plan to address the border fighting that could impact Thailand. This is to prepare teachers and students to respond safely if danger arises along the border. The school is also assessing whether to open for classes tomorrow amid the ongoing conflict.
The Mae Sot district administration and the village headman of Village No. 9 announced via loudspeaker that residents should remain inside their homes and are strictly prohibited from going outside for their safety.
