Update: Floodwaters in Nakhon Phanom city have decreased, with some areas returning to normal. However, the Mekong River remains above 10 meters, and officials continue to monitor the situation.
On 10 August 2026, reporters reported the latest developments in Nakhon Phanom province regarding flood impacts on several roads within the municipality, including the commercial area of the municipal fresh market. Some main roads still have localized flooding. Relevant agencies have been mobilized to the area to inspect, develop solutions, and install pumps to drain water into tributaries and the Mekong River throughout the day.
This has led to flood levels returning to normal, with only some spots experiencing slow drainage. This is due to urban growth and large construction projects lacking standard water diversion systems to the Mekong River. Consequently, continuous heavy rain can cause drainage delays as the volume of water cannot be discharged into the Mekong quickly enough.
Meanwhile, the Mekong River's level continues to rise above 10 meters, about 2 meters below the critical overflow point of 12 meters. If this critical level is reached, the flooding will spread more widely because of ongoing heavy rainfall and slow drainage from main tributaries into the Mekong. This affects low-lying areas, agricultural land, and communities near the main tributaries. The Nakhon Phanom municipality has added large pumps to accelerate drainage from the city into the Mekong. With continued rainfall, authorities have issued warnings to risk areas, continue monitoring, and stand ready to assist residents if they are affected.
